Description

This is a shallow drum shade on a polished chrome plate, held close against the ceiling rather than dropped on a flex. The shade is dual faux silk, nude beige outside with a moonlight lining that softens the light as it spreads, and a frosted acrylic diffuser closes the underside so the lamp is not stared at from below. At 40cm across it reads as a broad, quiet circle overhead.

It suits hallways, landings and bedrooms, and any room where a hanging fitting would be in the way. We would fit it above a dining table in a flat with lower ceilings, where light needs to be wide rather than low. One E27 lamp does the work, and the diffuser keeps the glare down for anyone sitting beneath it. Dimming is possible if you pair a suitable lamp with a compatible dimmer, neither of which comes with the fitting.

The metalwork is chrome, polished to a bright mirror, and the fabric is a woven faux silk with the beige and moonlight tones playing against each other. Keeping it looking well is mostly a matter of dust: lift it off the silk with a soft brush before it works into the weave, then buff the chrome with a dry cloth. Damp is the thing to avoid, so we would look elsewhere for a bathroom or a shower room. It carries a one year warranty. The wider Baymont range runs to universal flush, semi flush and linear pendant fittings in antique brass, satin nickel and satin black, so the metal can be carried from room to room. The lamp itself is sold separately.

Use a soft brush or a lint roller to lift dust from the faux silk. Keep water and solvents away from it, and wipe the chrome with a dry cloth only.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. Fabric and steam do not agree, so keep it to dry rooms such as bedrooms, hallways and living spaces.

Is the lamp visible from underneath?

No. The acrylic diffuser sits across the base of the drum and hides the lamp from below while spreading the light.
