Description

A drum shade in dual faux silk sits close overhead here, midnight black on the outside with a green olive lining that warms the light as it falls. The fabric measures 40cm across, and the shallow drop keeps the fitting up near the ceiling rather than hanging down into the room. Polished chrome shows at the canopy and the short stem, a bright finish that picks up whatever daylight the room gets. It takes a single screw-in lamp, and we would choose an LED GLS globe for a soft, even glow through the fabric.

Hallways and landings are the obvious homes for it, along with bedrooms and small dining rooms where a pendant on a flex would hang too low for comfort. It suits anyone wanting the softness of a fabric shade without giving up headroom. The black and olive pairing reads well against warm neutrals, painted panelling and darker joinery, and it holds its own in a white room too. With a suitable dimmable lamp and a matching dimmer, the light can be brought down to something quieter for the evening; neither is supplied with the fitting.

Construction is straightforward: a metal frame and canopy in polished chrome, with faux silk stretched over the drum. Keep the fabric fresh by drawing a soft brush across it now and then, power off first, and give the chrome a rub with a dry duster so watermarks do not set. Damp cloths are best kept away from the shade. It carries a one year warranty.
