Baymont Semi Flush Ceiling Light 30cm - Polished Chrome

The shade here is a shallow drum finished in silver leaf and lined with white laminate, held close to the ceiling on a polished chrome plate rather than dropped on a rod or a length of flex. Across the base sits a frosted acrylic diffuser, which softens the light on its way down and keeps the lamp itself out of view. At 30cm across it reads as a neat disc from below, broad enough to hold its own in a room without crowding a smaller ceiling.

We would use it in a hallway, on a landing, in a small bedroom or over a desk, anywhere the ceiling sits low enough that a hanging fitting would meet a head or a door. It is one we reach for in older houses and flats where ceiling heights change from room to room. It takes a single E27 lamp of up to 20W, and an LED GLS is what we would fit for the even fill the diffuser is asking for. Dimming is possible with a compatible lamp and dimmer, bought separately.

The metalwork wears a polished chrome finish, bright and reflective, and the leafed shade picks up that brightness without trying to match it. Keep the chrome free of fingerprints with a dry duster, lift dust from the shade with a soft brush, and give the acrylic diffuser no more than a barely damp cloth, since anything abrasive will haze the surface. It carries a one year warranty. Which lamp does it take, and is one supplied?

It takes one E27 lamp rated up to 20W, and no lamp is supplied. An LED GLS (A60) shape is the one we would recommend, as it sits well behind the frosted diffuser.

How far does it hang below the ceiling?

The body measures 170mm deep, so it stays close to the ceiling line. The shade is 300mm in diameter.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you use a dimmable lamp with a matching dimmer switch. No dimmer is included with the fitting.

How should the acrylic diffuser be cleaned?

Switch the light off and let it cool, then wipe the acrylic with a soft cloth very lightly dampened with water. Avoid solvents, polishes and any abrasive pad, all of which will scratch or cloud the surface.

Is it suitable for a bathroom or a covered porch?

No. It is rated for dry indoor rooms only, so keep it to hallways, bedrooms, living rooms and similar spaces away from steam and damp.
