Description
The Amoatsy Decorative Tree is a slim sculpture in the shape of a stylised leaf. Its fronds are cut through with open slots, so the wall behind shows through the metal. It is made from aluminium with a nickel finish that reads as a soft silver, and the surface has a textured, hammered look that catches the light as it moves across the room. A short aluminium stem lifts the leaf clear of a rectangular base of natural mango wood. It stands 55cm tall and measures 18cm long and 8cm wide, so it needs only a narrow strip of shelf to make its point.
We see it working best where its height has room: on a mantelpiece, a sideboard, a hallway console or a deep windowsill, where daylight passes through the cut-outs. The pale wood of the base warms the cool metal, so it sits comfortably with oak and walnut furniture, white walls and neutral linens, as well as with brass, chrome and glass. Stand a pair at either end of a shelf, or group it with candles and books, and it gives height to a display that would otherwise sit low. It suits anyone who likes botanical shapes but wants something that never needs watering.
The leaf and stem are aluminium and the base is mango wood, and the whole piece weighs 0.8KG. Aluminium does not rust, and mango wood shows a natural grain, so the base carries its own pattern of lines. At that weight it is easy to lift down and move from room to room, while the wooden base gives it a flat footing. As decor in metal and wood, it belongs indoors in a dry room. Give it a level surface with a little space either side, and the open fronds will read clearly against a plain wall.
