Description

A standing tree built from two flat brass silhouettes slotted together down the centre, so it reads as a tree from every side rather than as a cut-out seen edge on. Each silhouette carries a stack of tiered branches, scalloped along their lower edges and stepping wider towards the bottom, and the tree stands on the four splayed branches at the foot. A five-pointed star, doubled the same way, sits at the apex. It is 30cm tall and 20cm across.

Thirty centimetres is a shelf, a mantel or a windowsill height rather than a floor one. Brass takes the light from whatever is lit around it rather than giving out any of its own, and an aged surface returns it warm rather than bright. It weighs 0.22kg.

The brass is cut from flat sheet by hand and the two halves are joined with fine brass wire, then aged to the finish it arrives in. Because every piece is cut by hand the tiers do not line up identically from one tree to the next. Katiri runs at 42cm as well.
