Description

A tripod floor lamp, 153cm tall, in antique wood. At 153cm tall it comes to about the height of a door handle plus a metre.

Cast and wrought iron are heavy by nature, and that weight is doing a job: it keeps the piece where it is put rather than shifting every time something brushes past. Iron also holds a hand-worked line that a machine-pressed metal cannot. It is lined in white, PVC: an unlined shade throws the outline of the bulb onto the wall, a lined one turns it into an even wash. The shade is included rather than sold alongside, which is worth checking against anything cheaper.

Wiring is for 2 E27 lamps up to 6-9W LED, supplied separately. E27 is the standard screw fitting, so a replacement is a supermarket purchase rather than a specialist one. It is not dimmable, which means you choose the warmth at the bulb rather than at the switch: a 2700K bulb will do more here than a dimmer would. The cable is black, with a foot switch you can reach without groping behind furniture, and a uk 3 pin with 3 amp fuse already fitted. The head adjusts, so you can aim the light at a book rather than a ceiling. A GLS shaped bulb, which is the word to look for on the box.

At 4.8kg the weight is in the base, which is what stops a tall lamp walking when it is knocked. It arrives in 2 boxes. Wood. Glass.

Two shades of the same size can light a room completely differently depending on how open the top and bottom are. A narrow top pushes light down into a pool; a wide one lets it wash the ceiling as well.
