Description

The Padgrove is a four light pendant built from angular gold leaf frames, with the lamps set inside an open metal structure rather than behind shades. Nothing diffuses the light, so the frames cast their own lines across the ceiling and walls as well as lighting the room below. It measures 575mm across, and the drop adjusts between 995mm and 2450mm, a wide range that covers a normal ceiling and a tall one. Four E14 lamp holders take 6W LED bulbs, and the fitting is dimmable, so the open bulbs can be softened when they would otherwise be glary.

Open frame pendants suit rooms that want shape as much as light. We would hang the Padgrove over a dining table, a kitchen island or a stairwell landing where the geometry can be read from below and from the side. At 575mm it is a generous size and needs space around it, and the long drop makes it a fair option for a double height hall. Because the bulbs are visible, hang it high enough that the lamps sit above normal eye level, or keep it dimmed when people are seated beneath.

The frame is metal with a gold leaf finish, warm and slightly uneven in tone, which is part of the character and keeps it from looking flat. At 3.9kg it is light for its size, so a standard ceiling fixing in sound plaster or a joist is usually enough. Dust it with a dry microfibre cloth, working along the bars with the power off and the bulbs cool, since an open frame collects more dust than a closed shade. Keep damp cloths, sprays and abrasive cleaners away from gold leaf. Clear or warm filament LED bulbs suit the Padgrove best.
