Description

The Calverdale cut linear pendant carries four faceted cut glass shades along an 890mm bar, 180mm deep, on a bright nickel frame. The drop adjusts from 450mm to 1790mm, so it can sit tight to a low ceiling or hang well down over an island. Each shade holds an E14 LED lamp at 6W, and the cut glass scatters light sideways as well as down, which stops the bar from feeling like a row of spotlights. The fitting weighs 8.1kg.

Linear pendants are made for long surfaces: a kitchen island, a run of worktop, a narrow dining table or a hall console. Four lamps spread along the bar light the whole length evenly, which is the point of the shape, and the output is bright enough to prepare food under. Hung over a table it puts light on every place setting rather than only the middle two. It is dimmable with compatible LED lamps and a dimmer switch, so the same ceiling light drops to a quieter level once everyone sits down to eat. We would centre the bar on the worktop rather than on the room.

Metal in a bright nickel finish sets the tone, cool and reflective, and the cut glass shades come off for washing in warm water. Dry them before they go back on, and use a dry soft cloth on the nickel; polishes and sprays are more likely to mark the plating than clean it. Levelling matters more with a bar than with a round pendant, since any tilt shows against the ceiling line, so leave the fixing and the wiring to a qualified electrician.
