Description

In antique brass, the thirteen light Fennhollow cascade drops ribbed clear glass globes at staggered heights from a single round plate. Warm brass behind fluted glass gives a golden cast to the highlights, so the fitting reads richer than the same shape in a cool metal. The plate measures 580mm and the drop runs from 3370mm to 3770mm, a stairwell length rather than a room length. Thirteen E27 lamp holders take 10W LED bulbs, and the pendant is dimmable, which lets a tall hall be lit fully for use and then held at a low level.

It belongs in height. A double height entrance hall, a turning staircase, a galleried landing or a tall room in a converted building all let the cascade fall the way it should, and the ribbed glass keeps giving something back when seen from an upper floor. Under a standard ceiling it simply will not work, since more than three metres of drop would put globes at head height. Measure the void first, then set the hanging point so the lowest globe clears stairs and handrails.

The plate and suspensions are metal in an antique brass finish, warm and lightly aged rather than polished, which sits well with timber, stone and deep paint colours. Fluted glass holds dust in the ribs, so dust along the flutes with a dry microfibre cloth or soft brush, power off and bulbs cool. Wipe the brass with a barely damp cloth and keep sprays and abrasive creams away from plating. At 13.3kg this needs a fixing rated for the load and access equipment to install safely. Shorter Fennhollow cascades and clusters suit rooms of normal height.
