Description

The Yarnwell mercury pendant hangs a 260mm mercury glass dome from a drop that adjusts between 440mm and 1540mm. The silvering inside the glass gives it a mottled, faintly antiqued surface that hides the lamp and bounces light back off the walls, so the fitting glows rather than glares. It takes one E27 LED lamp at 10W and weighs 2.7kg, an easy weight for most ceilings.

Because mercury glass is more contained than clear, a single pendant works well where you want a warm point of light rather than broad coverage: over a bedside table, in a snug, at the end of a hall, or above a stairwell landing. On a stair return in particular the silvering keeps the fitting from glaring at eye level as you climb. Two or three in a row suit a kitchen island or breakfast bar, where the surface picks up the tone of the worktop below. It is dimmable with a compatible LED lamp and dimmer switch. We prefer the mercury glass where the lamp would otherwise sit at eye level.

The dome is glass with its mercury effect applied inside, and the suspension and ceiling plate are metal. Wipe the outside with a barely damp soft cloth and dry it at once; never use abrasive cream or scouring pads, as the silvered layer is what makes the finish. The drop is set at installation by shortening the cable, so choose the height first, and as with any mains ceiling light the wiring is a job for a qualified electrician. If you prefer the lamp on show, the Yarnwell bubble pendant uses the same dome in clear textured glass.
