Constant current or constant voltage: which driver you need

The first thing to check is whether your fitting calls for a constant current or a constant voltage driver, because the two are not interchangeable. Constant current drivers, rated in milliamps such as 250mA, 350mA, 500mA, 700mA or 1400mA, suit fixed loads like downlights and LED panels that specify a current. Constant voltage drivers run at a fixed output of 12V, 24V or 48V and are the right choice for LED strip and tape that quotes a voltage. Always match the driver to the figure printed on the fitting or its data sheet.

Working out wattage headroom

Once the type is settled, add up the total load of everything the driver will power and choose a unit rated above that figure so it is not running flat out.
