LED Drivers

An LED driver is the power supply that sits between the mains and your fittings, holding the output steady so the light runs as intended. We stock drivers from Ideal Lux, Knightsbridge, PowerMaster and Lumilife, covering constant current and constant voltage types across a wide spread of wattages, dimming options and IP ratings for indoor and weatherproof use.

Constant current or constant voltage: which driver you need

The first thing to check is whether your fitting calls for a constant current or a constant voltage driver, because the two are not interchangeable. Constant current drivers, rated in milliamps such as 250mA, 350mA, 500mA, 700mA or 1400mA, suit fixed loads like downlights and LED panels that specify a current. Constant voltage drivers run at a fixed output of 12V, 24V or 48V and are the right choice for LED strip and tape that quotes a voltage. Always match the driver to the figure printed on the fitting or its data sheet.

Working out wattage headroom

Once the type is settled, add up the total load of everything the driver will power and choose a unit rated above that figure so it is not running flat out. Our range spans low-wattage units under 10W through to 150W and higher for longer runs and bigger installations, with sizes from small to medium to suit the space you have in a ceiling void, plinth or enclosure. Leaving a margin keeps the driver cooler and steadier in use.

Dimming, IP rating and build

We carry both dimmable and non-dimmable drivers. Dimmable options include 1-10V, TRIAC, DALI and push dimming, so you can pair the driver with the control method your circuit uses. For rating, most units here are IP20 for dry indoor spots, while IP67 drivers are sealed for damp or outdoor positions. Housings run from plastic, ABS and polycarbonate through to metal, giving you options for both tucked-away and harder-wearing locations.

Fitting your driver

Plan where the driver will live before you buy, allowing room for airflow and access. Any work involving fixed mains wiring should be carried out by a qualified electrician, who can confirm the driver matches your fittings and is sited correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a constant current and a constant voltage LED driver?

A constant current driver holds a fixed current, quoted in milliamps such as 350mA or 700mA, and suits fittings like downlights and panels that specify a current. A constant voltage driver holds a fixed output such as 12V, 24V or 48V and is used with LED strip and tape that quotes a voltage. The two are not interchangeable, so match the driver to the figure your fitting states.

How much wattage headroom should I allow when choosing a driver?

Add up the total load of every fitting the driver will power, then pick a unit rated above that total so it is not working at its limit. We stock drivers from under 10W up to 150W and beyond. Leaving a sensible margin helps the driver run cooler and hold its output steadily, which is better for both the driver and the LEDs it supplies.

Which dimming types do your LED drivers support?

We carry both dimmable and non-dimmable drivers. Among the dimmable units the range includes 1-10V, TRIAC, DALI and push dimming. The dimming method needs to suit your control wiring and switch, so check what your circuit uses before choosing. If you do not need dimming, a non-dimmable driver is a straightforward option for a fixed-output installation.

Can I use these LED drivers outdoors?

It depends on the IP rating. Most drivers in our range are IP20, which is intended for dry indoor positions only. For damp areas or outdoor use we stock IP67 drivers, which are sealed against water ingress. Always check the rating against where the driver will sit, and have a qualified electrician confirm the installation is suitable for the location.
