What makes a pendant a cluster

A cluster pendant carries several separate drops from a single ceiling plate. That is the whole idea: one fixing point, one electrical connection, and a group of lights that reads as one piece. It gives you the visual weight of several pendants without the ceiling work, and without the difficulty of getting three separate fittings hanging in a straight line. Drop counts here start at three and run well into double figures on the larger designs.

Where a cluster works and where it does not

Over a kitchen island a cluster fills the length without the regimented look of a row. Above a round dining table it works better than a row does, because the drops can be arranged in a circle. In a stairwell or a double-height hall, a cluster with staggered drops gives you something worth looking at from both floors. Where a cluster struggles is a low ceiling, because the drops need vertical space to separate. Under about 2.4 metres, a flush or semi-flush fitting will serve you better.

Fixed drops against adjustable ones

Some clusters arrive with the cable lengths set and cannot be changed. Others let you adjust each drop, either by shortening the cable at the ceiling plate or through an adjustable suspension. Adjustable drops are worth looking for if you want a staggered arrangement or you are hanging over a stairwell where the floor is not level with itself. Glass, crystal and metal

Clear and smoked glass shades are a popular choice and they suit almost any room, because the light passes through rather than bouncing off. Crystal clusters throw refraction around and belong over a table or in a hall where you want the sparkle. Opal glass diffuses more and glares less, which matters when the fitting hangs at eye level on a stair. Metal shades push the light down instead, so they work as task lighting over a worktop where the glass options would spill light sideways.

Lamps, dimming and colour temperature

Roughly half of these are integrated LED, where the light source is built in and the fitting is sealed. The rest take replaceable lamps, most often E27 or the small G9 capsule. Integrated units are often dimmable but need a compatible trailing-edge dimmer, and the specification says which. If you are running a cluster over a dining table, warm white around 2700K flatters food and faces; a kitchen island generally wants 3000K or a touch cooler for working light.

Ceiling plates, weight and fitting

A cluster concentrates its whole weight on one point, and the larger designs are heavy. The ceiling plate needs fixing into a joist or a proper cavity anchor rather than plasterboard alone, and an electrician will tell you quickly whether the ceiling can take it. Check the plate diameter as well as the drop, because a wide plate on a narrow hallway ceiling can look ungainly. Every product page lists the plate size, the maximum drop and the weight.
