Sound for a venue or an installation

Commercial audio divides on one decision: low impedance or 100V line. For one or two rooms with short cable runs, low impedance speakers wired to an ordinary amplifier are simpler and cheaper. For three or more zones across a building, 100V line puts a transformer in each speaker so many can share one amplifier over long, thin cable without losing level, and it brings zone control and paging with it. Get that decision right first and the rest of the specification follows from it.

Sound for a band, a DJ or an event

A mobile rig is built around speakers, a mixer and microphones. Active speakers have the amplifier built in and need only mains and a signal, which suits anyone loading in alone. Passive cabinets need a separate power amplifier but let you choose how much power you send and expand later. Add a subwoofer before you consider larger tops, because taking the low end off the smaller drivers usually makes the whole system sound louder and cleaner at the same setting.

Recording and streaming

For a spoken voice or a podcast, a cardioid dynamic microphone is often easier to get a good result from than a sensitive condenser, because it plays down room noise and needs less treatment around it. You will also want a stand or boom arm, a pop filter, closed back headphones so the microphone does not hear your monitoring, and an interface or mixer with phantom power if you choose a condenser.

Learning and playing an instrument

Two mistakes account for most abandoned instruments: buying something too large, particularly for children, and neglecting the setup. On a guitar, how high the strings sit above the frets affects whether it gets played far more than the price does. Budget for a setup, buy the smaller size, and remember that amplifiers are not interchangeable between instruments, since a bass through a guitar amplifier sounds thin and can damage the speaker.

Screens, projection and aerials

Mounting a television comes down to the VESA hole pattern on the back of the screen and what the wall is made of, and plasterboard must be fixed into the studs rather than the board. For a much larger image, a projector and screen often costs less than an equivalent television, sized so viewers sit roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen width away. If reception has worsened for no apparent reason, 4G and 5G interference is now a common cause and an in-line filter is the cheapest first thing to try.

Cables, connections and the faults they cause

A large share of audio and video problems are cables rather than equipment. Balanced connections on XLR or TRS survive long runs because noise cancels at the far end, while unbalanced RCA or TS leads collect hum after a few metres. Signal cable and speaker cable are not interchangeable. With HDMI, what matters is meeting the right bandwidth standard rather than the price, and a hum between two connected devices is a ground loop to be cured with an isolator, never by removing an earth pin.

Protecting your equipment

Anything that travels weekly should live in a case. Rack equipment is measured in U, at 1.75 inches per unit, and you should allow a spare U or two for cabling and airflow because a tightly packed rack runs hot. Moulded ABS suits microphones, cables and smaller items, while plywood with aluminium extrusion is stronger and repairable for touring use. Padded bags are the sensible compromise for instruments that only travel between home and rehearsal.

Why do I get a hum when two devices are connected?
It is normally a ground loop, where the pair share both a signal cable and separate mains earths. Use a balanced connection, a DI box with a ground lift, or an isolating transformer. Never remove an earth pin, which is dangerous.
