Outdoor Wall Lights

Outdoor wall lights and outdoor wall lanterns mount beside doors, on garden walls and along passageways, and almost all of this range is rated IP44 or above for UK weather, with many at IP54 and IP65 for more exposed positions. Up and down designs wash light over brickwork, while PIR motion sensor options switch on automatically, with a few on a photocell. Finishes span black, anthracite, grey, white and bronze in lantern and modern builds.

Where outdoor wall lights work

Outdoor wall lights mount beside front and back doors, along passageways and on garden walls, giving light for arriving, finding keys and moving safely after dark. They suit porches, side returns and exposed garden boundaries alike, and the right fitting depends on how sheltered the spot is and how much light you want thrown across the surface.

What the range covers

The range runs from traditional wall lanterns to modern up and down fittings, with PIR motion sensor options that switch on by themselves, and a few on a photocell. Finishes include black, graphite, grey and brass, in metal and glass builds. Bulb fittings cover E27, GU10 and E14, alongside integrated LED designs, with IP ratings mostly IP44 to IP65.

Choosing an IP rating

IP44 suits sheltered positions such as a covered porch. For walls open to driving rain, IP54 and IP65 fittings are built to cope with more exposure. Match the rating to the spot rather than the building as a whole, since a doorway under an overhang and an open garden wall face very different weather.

Up, down or both

Up and down fittings wash light over brickwork in two directions for an even effect across a facade. A single downward throw lights a path or step more directly. For driveways and side gates, a fitting with a PIR sensor brings light on as you approach and saves leaving it running all night.

How to position them

Mount wall lights at roughly head height beside a door so the beam falls where you need it without glare into the eyes of anyone arriving. On a longer wall or path, space several fittings evenly so the light stays steady from one end to the other rather than pooling in one place. Free delivery worldwide on all orders over £99. Outdoor wiring should be fitted by a qualified electrician.

Frequently Asked Questions

What IP rating do I need for an outdoor wall light?
Match the rating to how exposed the wall is. IP44 suits sheltered spots near a door or under an overhang, while IP54 and IP65 designs cope with direct rain on an open wall. Each product lists its IP figure, so check it against the position before choosing.

Which fittings include a sensor?
Several designs carry a PIR motion sensor that switches the light on when movement is detected, and others use a photocell that turns it on at dusk and off at dawn. A small number are solar-powered with a built-in sensor. The sensor type, where fitted, is noted on the product page.

What is an up and down wall light?
An up and down light casts a beam both upward and downward from a single fitting, throwing light across the wall above and below it. It is a popular choice for framing a front door or adding rhythm along a garden wall, and many here are GU10 or E27 designs.

Can I install an outdoor wall light myself?
These are mains-wired fittings connected to an outdoor circuit, so we recommend a qualified electrician carries out the install and confirms the wall fixing is secure and weatherproof. Solar models are the exception, mounting without mains wiring, though they still need a spot that catches daylight.
