Height is the whole question

Leave at least 2.1m of clear height under any fitting in a walkway, and more if the hall is used to carry furniture through. On a standard 2.4m ceiling that leaves about 30cm of drop, which is why most of what we stock here is compact. Where the hall has a stairwell or a double height void, the calculation changes completely.

Where a hall pendant earns its place

A pendant over a stairwell void, seen from both floors, is the strongest use. A pendant over an entrance area where the ceiling is higher than the corridor is the second. A pendant in a 90cm corridor under a 2.4m ceiling is usually the wrong fitting and a flush ceiling light is the right one.

An entrance hall with a higher ceiling than the corridor it leads to is the other candidate. Hanging a pendant in the taller section and running flush fittings down the corridor reads as a deliberate hierarchy rather than a compromise, and it gives the front door something to arrive at without putting a fitting in anybody's way.

Size against the space

Sizes here stop at 30cm, and in a corridor 20cm and under reads better. The Wick and Dreifa ranges are the small single drops, which suit a run of two or three along a hall. Larger fittings in a hall look correct only where the ceiling gives them room above head height.

A row of small pendants

Two or three small pendants spaced along a hall light it more evenly than one fitting in the middle, and they read as deliberate. Keep them at identical drops and space them evenly against the length of the hall rather than against the doors, which are rarely evenly spaced themselves.

Keep the drop consistent and the spacing honest. Measure the run and divide it evenly, then check the result against the doors: if a pendant lands directly in front of a doorway it will be in the way of the door swing and of anyone coming through it. Shifting the whole run by twenty centimetres usually solves it without breaking the rhythm.

Stairwells and reaching the lamp

The best looking hall pendant is the one over a stairwell, and it is also the hardest to relamp. Before choosing, work out how you would change the lamp: a fitting that needs a tower scaffold over a staircase is a fitting you will live with dark. A rise and fall or a long flex that can be unhooked is worth the compromise.

Finish and glazing

Black leads here, then polished chrome and brass. In a hall with little natural light, a clear or open shade puts more light into the space than an opaque one. An opal or frosted glass reduces glare, which matters when the fitting sits close to eye level at the top of a stairs.

Output in a hall should be modest. 300 to 500 lumens per fitting across two or three pendants lights a corridor comfortably without glare at eye level, which matters more here than anywhere because a hall pendant sits close to where people are looking as they walk towards it.
