Home Office Lighting

Lighting a home office is two jobs: enough light on the desk to work by, and enough on the walls that the screen is not the brightest thing in the room. We stock desk and table lamps for the first, wall and ceiling fittings for the second, and dimmable options so the room reads differently after hours. Warm white for evening, neutral for daytime.

How much light a desk needs, and where it should come from

A desk wants somewhere around 500 lux on the surface for reading and writing, and that is a lamp on the desk rather than a brighter ceiling fitting. Put it on the side away from your writing hand so the shadow falls out of the way, and choose a head you can angle: the useful adjustment is not the height, it is being able to tip the beam off the screen. Then light the room as well. A desk lamp in a dark room gives you a bright pool and black walls, which is the arrangement most likely to tire you out. A wall or ceiling fitting doing the background is what makes the desk lamp comfortable.

Glare, screens, and where not to put a lamp

Two things cause most screen glare at a desk: a light source in front of you reflecting off the panel, and a window behind the screen. Neither is fixed by a better lamp. Move the light to the side and slightly behind your line of sight, and put the screen at right angles to the window rather than facing it. A diffused shade beats a bare bulb here, and a matt finish on the fitting beats a polished one, because a chrome arm in your peripheral vision is its own small distraction.

Warm or neutral white, and switching between them

Neutral white around 4000K keeps colours honest and reads as alert, which suits daytime work and anything where you are judging a colour on screen. Warm white at 2700K to 3000K is the tone of a living room and it suits the same desk at eight in the evening. If the room is both an office and part of the house, a tuneable white fitting or a dimmable warm one saves buying twice. Every page states the colour temperature, and whether it is fixed or adjustable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How bright should a desk lamp be?
Aim for roughly 400 to 600 lumens landing on the work surface, which is a 6 to 10 watt LED at desk height. Brighter is not better if it is all in one pool: light the room as well.

Which colour temperature suits a home office?
Neutral white around 4000K for daytime work and colour accuracy, warm white at 2700K to 3000K in the evening. A tuneable or dimmable fitting covers both.

How do I stop glare on my screen?
Put the lamp to the side rather than in front, angle the head away from the panel, and turn the screen so a window is beside it rather than behind or facing it.

Can home office lighting be dimmed?
Many of these fittings can. Where there is a bulb socket, dimming needs a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer. Where the LED is integrated, the page says whether dimming is built in.

What if there is no ceiling point in the room?
A plug-in wall light or a floor lamp does the background job without wiring. Both are in this range and neither needs an electrician.

Clamp, plug-in or hard-wired?
A clamp lamp frees the desk surface and moves with you. A plug-in wall light keeps the desk clear and needs no wiring. Hard-wired is the tidiest and the least reversible, so it suits a room that will stay an office.
