Why start with the finish
Most people choose a light by shape and then discover the finish does not sit with the rest of the room. Working the other way round is easier. The metal is what ties a fitting to the door handles, the taps, the curtain pole and the picture frames already in the space, and it is the thing the eye registers first from across a room. Once the finish is settled, the choice between a pendant and a flush fitting is a question of ceiling height rather than taste.
Warm metals and cool metals
Brass, gold, bronze and copper are the warm group. They soften a room, flatter deep wall colours such as green, navy and burgundy, and reflect light with a golden cast. Chrome, nickel and silver are the cool group. They read as brighter and more contemporary, suit pale and grey palettes, and throw a whiter light. Black sits outside both: it behaves as a graphic outline rather than a colour, which is why it works in a plain modern room and a period one equally well.
Matching across a room
Mixing metals is normal and usually looks better than matching everything. The workable approach is to let one metal dominate and use a second as an accent, rather than splitting the room evenly between two. Where you do want to match, keep the warmth consistent and accept that the tones will differ slightly. Brass in particular varies far more between manufacturers than black or chrome does, so an exact match across a ceiling fitting, a pair of wall lights and a table lamp is rarely achievable and rarely noticed.
How the finish changes the light
This is the practical point behind the decorative one. Pale and reflective finishes bounce light back into a room; dark ones absorb it. A black fitting throws noticeably less light around a space than a chrome or gold one of identical specification, which matters when it is the only light in the room. In a small, north-facing or dark-painted space, a warm reflective finish does more work than a dark one. Over a dining table, where the light is meant to fall on the table and let the corners recede, black earns its place.
Finishes and upkeep
Matt and brushed finishes hide fingerprints and small marks; polished and gloss finishes show everything. That matters most on wall lights and table lamps, which get handled, and least on ceiling fittings, which do not. Lacquered brass and gold need a dry cloth and nothing else, since metal polish cuts through the lacquer. Unlacquered brass will patinate and darken where hands reach it, which some people want and others do not, so check whether a fitting is lacquered if you need the colour to stay put.
