Description
The Watkins is a 420mm diameter flush ceiling light built around a domed stained glass shade composed of hand-cut glass panels in purples, ambers, greens and ruby reds. Each glass piece is wrapped in copper foil and soldered together using traditional Tiffany techniques, creating a mosaic-like surface that shows colour variation and iridescence when lit. A vintage bronze metal rim holds the dome against a matching bronze ceiling plate, and two E27 bulbs inside (sold separately) illuminate the glass from within.
Designed for rooms with ceiling heights below 2.4m where a pendant would hang too low, the Watkins sits 135mm from ceiling to base, making it suitable for hallways, bedrooms, landings and period properties with lower ceilings. The 420mm diameter provides enough light spread for a 3m x 3m room when paired with 60W-equivalent LED bulbs. The flush mount fixes directly to a standard UK ceiling rose and the vintage bronze finish pairs with traditional, Arts and Crafts, and warm-toned contemporary interiors.
The stained glass dome shows different colours depending on ambient light conditions and bulb colour temperature. Under daylight the greens and purples dominate; when lit from inside with warm-white bulbs the ambers and reds come forward. The glass surface is textured rather than smooth, with visible solder lines and slight dimensional variation between panels, characteristic of hand-assembled Tiffany-style work. The bronze trim develops a darker patina over time in high-humidity environments.

Frequently Asked
What bulbs does the Watkins take?
Two E27 (Edison screw) bulbs up to 60W each, sold separately. Most users pair this with 6-10W warm-white LED bulbs at 2700K-3000K to bring out the amber and red tones in the glass.
Is it suitable for low ceilings?
Yes. The 135mm fitting height makes it appropriate for ceilings below 2.4m where a pendant would hang too low or feel visually heavy.
How is the stained glass cleaned?
Wipe gently with a dry microfibre cloth when the bulbs are cool and the power is switched off. For stubborn marks, a barely-damp cloth with distilled water is acceptable, but avoid soaking the solder joins and do not use household glass cleaners or sprays.
Does the glass colour vary between individual fittings?
Yes. Each Watkins shade is hand-assembled from individually cut glass pieces, so the exact placement and tonal variation of the purples, ambers, greens and reds differ slightly between individual fittings.
