Gold, brass or antique gold?

These three sit close enough together that photographs rarely separate them, and the difference matters once the fitting is in the room. Gold is the warmest and carries a faint pink cast, which reads as richer and slightly softer. Brass has more green in it and reads as more traditional and a little cooler. Antique or aged gold is deliberately darkened and unevenly toned, so a new fitting looks settled rather than showroom-fresh. If a room already has warm hardware, match the warmth rather than the exact metal: an antique tone bridges between existing brass and gold far more comfortably than a bright polished finish, which invites direct comparison.

Where gold earns its place

Gold flatters warm palettes. Against deep green, navy, burgundy, terracotta or a warm neutral it looks considered and deliberate. Against a cool grey it can look adrift unless something else in the room picks the tone up, whether that is a picture frame, a handle or a cushion. The practical advantage over darker finishes is reflectivity: gold bounces light rather than absorbing it, so a gold pendant lights more of the room than a black one of identical specification. That makes it a sensible choice where the pendant is doing real work rather than only decorating.

Hanging height over a table

Over a dining table, the bottom of the shade wants to sit roughly 75 to 85cm above the table top. Lower than that and it blocks the eyeline across the table; higher and the pool of light spreads too thin to feel intimate. Over a kitchen island the same range applies, though a wide shade can sit a little higher without losing the effect. In a stairwell or double-height hall the rule changes entirely: hang so the fitting reads from the landing as well as from below, and keep at least 2.1m of clearance at the lowest point of the stairs.

One, a pair, or a cluster

A single pendant suits a round table or a small space with a clear centre. Over a rectangular table or a run of worktop, two or three smaller pendants distribute light far more evenly and look better in proportion than one oversized fitting. Space them roughly 60 to 75cm apart and keep the outer two in from the ends rather than level with them. A cluster, where several flexes drop from one ceiling plate at staggered heights, gives the look of a group from a single ceiling point, which matters when you are working with existing wiring rather than rewiring the room.

The inside of the shade matters more than the outside

This is the detail that separates two gold pendants that look identical when switched off. A shade with a gold or brass-lined interior bounces warm light downwards, so the light falling on the table takes on the colour of the metal and flatters both food and faces. A white-lined interior throws a cleaner, brighter light. An unlined dark interior absorbs, giving a tighter and more dramatic pool. Where the shade is glass rather than metal, light passes through as well as down, and smoked or amber glass warms it further still.

Lamps and colour temperature

Warm white at 2700K is the natural partner for gold and keeps the metal looking rich. Cooler lamps at 4000K and above flatten the warmth and can push gold towards a slightly green cast, which is worth knowing before blaming the fitting. Where lamps sit visible in an open frame, clear filament bulbs suit the look and add warmth the finish alone does not give. If you plan to dim, check that both the lamp and the dimmer are compatible, since not every LED lamp dims smoothly.

Fitting and care

Pendants hang from a ceiling rose and the weight needs to reach a joist or a proper fixing rather than plasterboard alone. Fabric flex can usually be shortened at the rose; rod-hung fittings adjust only in fixed increments, so check the stated minimum and maximum drop against your ceiling before ordering. For cleaning, a dry microfibre cloth on metal and glass is right. Never use metal polish on a lacquered gold finish, as it cuts straight through the lacquer and leaves patchy bare metal that cannot be restored.
