Which brass finish?
The word covers a range of quite different looks. Polished brass is bright and reflective and reads as traditional and formal. Brushed or satin brass has a fine directional grain, catches light softly and is the most widely used finish in contemporary interiors. Antique or aged brass is deliberately darkened, often unevenly, so it looks settled rather than new and pairs well with older furniture. Unlacquered brass will patinate over time and change colour with handling, which some people want and others do not, so check whether a lamp is lacquered if a stable finish matters to you.
Getting the height right
The usual guide for a bedside lamp is that the bottom of the shade should sit roughly at eye level when you are sitting up in bed, which for most bedside tables means a lamp between 50 and 65cm tall. On a console or sideboard, aim for a lamp about a third to a half the width of the furniture beneath it. For a desk or reading lamp, what matters more is that the light falls on the page rather than in your eyes, so an adjustable head or an arm that reaches over the work is worth more than exact height.
Shades and how they change the light
A shade does most of the work. A fabric drum or empire shade diffuses light softly and throws it up and down, which suits a bedside or living room lamp. A metal or glass shade directs light down in a tighter pool, better for reading or task work. A pale linen shade gives warm, even light, while a black or dark shade concentrates it dramatically and lights much less of the room. Where the shade is included, check the description, since some brass lamps are sold as a base only.
Pairing brass with your existing metals
Mixing metals is normal and usually looks better than matching everything. The practical approach is to let one metal dominate and use the second as an accent. Brass sits comfortably alongside black, and against dark green, navy and deep red it is particularly effective. If a room already has chrome or nickel hardware, an aged brass rather than a bright polished brass tends to bridge the two more comfortably.
Bulbs, dimming and switches
Warm white lamps at 2700K flatter a brass finish and keep the light domestic. Cooler lamps make brass look slightly green, which is worth knowing before blaming the lamp. Check where the switch is: an in-line switch on the cable is easy to reach beside a bed, while a switch on the lamp body suits a console where you pass by. If you want to dim the lamp, both the bulb and any dimmer need to be compatible, since not every LED lamp dims smoothly.
Care
Lacquered brass needs no more than a dry cloth, and polish should be avoided entirely since it will cut through the lacquer and leave patchy bare metal. Unlacquered brass can be polished if you want to keep it bright, or left alone if you prefer the patina. Either way, keep liquid away from the lamp base, particularly on a marble or stone base where a spill can leave a mark that does not lift.
