Description

A table lamp, 43cm tall, in brass. At 14cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. It works as a second light rather than a first. One overhead fitting flattens a room; a lamp at table height gives it corners and shadows again, and that is the job this one is doing.

A warm colour advances: it makes a piece read as closer and a room as smaller and more enclosed, which is an argument for it in a space that already feels cavernous and against it in one that does not. The texture is in the surface rather than printed on it, so it catches light at the ridges and shades in the hollows. A flat finish reads as one colour from any distance; a textured one reads as several.

A shade does two jobs at once and they pull against each other: it hides the bulb from your eye, and it decides how much light escapes sideways rather than up and down. A dense fabric does the first well and the second hardly at all. A fabric shade fades from the inside out rather than the outside in, because the bulb is closer than the window. A lining slows that considerably, which is most of what a lining is for. A pair reads as deliberate rather than repetitive, and at this width two will sit either side of a bed without crowding the table.
