What each type of glass does to the light
This is the decision the whole page turns on, and photographs rarely convey it. Opal glass is white through the body rather than coated, so it diffuses evenly and hides the lamp completely, giving soft light with no visible hotspot. Clear glass diffuses almost nothing, so the lamp itself becomes the light source and the fitting sparkles rather than glows. Ribbed or fluted glass sits between the two, breaking the light into vertical bands so you get some sparkle without a bare bulb in view. Smoked and tinted glass cuts output noticeably and warms the tone, which suits a snug or dining room but not a room that needs to be genuinely well lit. Seeded glass carries deliberate bubbles that scatter light in small points, a decorative effect rather than a functional one.
How much light actually gets through
The practical consequence of the above is that two fittings taking identical lamps can light a room very differently. Opal glass passes most of the light but spreads it, so the room is evenly lit and nothing glares. Clear glass passes nearly all of it but concentrates it, so the room is bright and the lamp is uncomfortable to look at. Smoked glass can absorb a substantial share, so a smoked fitting in a kitchen usually needs a second light source. If the fitting is the only light in the room, opal is the safe choice and smoked is the one to think twice about.
Flush mount, semi-flush and dropped
A glass flush mount ceiling light sits tight against the ceiling with no gap, which is what you want under about 2.4 metres or anywhere people walk directly beneath. A semi-flush sits on a short stem an inch or two down, letting light wash up onto the ceiling as well as down, which lifts a room and makes it feel taller. A dropped or multi-light glass fitting reads as a feature and needs the height to carry it. Ceiling height decides this more than taste does, so measure before choosing.
Bathrooms and damp rooms
Glass is a natural fit for bathrooms because it wipes clean and does not mind humidity, but the fitting still needs the right IP rating. IP44 is the usual minimum outside the immediate shower zone and IP65 where direct water is possible. The zones are measured from the bath or shower rather than applied to the whole room, so a fitting over a basin and one over a bath may need different ratings. Opal glass is the usual choice in a bathroom, since it hides the lamp and looks clean rather than showing every splash mark the way clear glass does.
Weight and fixing
Glass is heavier than it looks, and a large opal dome or a multi-light glass fitting can weigh a surprising amount for its size. The back plate needs fixing into a joist or a proper ceiling fixing rather than plasterboard alone. Check the stated weight on the product page before deciding where it goes, and be realistic about whether you can hold the diffuser one-handed while unscrewing a retaining ring, since some designs genuinely need two people to fit.
Changing a lamp, and getting a replacement shade
Before buying, look at how the glass comes off. Some flush fittings have three small thumbscrews, some a bayonet twist, and some a retaining ring that has to be turned while supporting the whole weight of the glass above your head on a ladder. This is the single most common regret with glass ceiling fittings. It is also worth checking whether the shade is a standard size, because a broken shade on a non-standard fitting usually means replacing the whole light.
Cleaning glass without streaks
Dust first, then wipe with a barely damp microfibre cloth and dry immediately, since glass shows every water mark once it dries in place. Let the fitting cool before touching it, as a warm shade will streak whatever you use. Avoid spraying cleaner directly at a fitting: it runs into the lampholder and the fixings rather than staying on the glass. Opal and frosted glass hold dust more visibly than clear, so they want doing more often.
