Opal white glass sits in a satin nickel trim on this shallow ceiling fitting, holding tight to the ceiling and spreading a soft, even light rather than a hard pool. The glass measures 26cm across and the depth is slight, so it reads as a neat disc from below. Switched on, the opal glass keeps the lamp itself out of sight and softens the glare. It takes a single E27 lamp, and we would put a GLS shaped LED in it; with a suitable lamp and dimmer it will dim.

Being splash protected, it is at home in a bathroom or en suite as well as the drier rooms, so it works over a basin, in a shower room or in a cloakroom. We reach for it in hallways, on landings, in a utility and in attic bedrooms with sloping ceilings, where headroom is short and anything hanging becomes a nuisance. It is one we would choose for a low ceiling. It suits anyone after quiet, low key light that gets on with the job.

The build is straightforward: an opal glass diffuser and a metal frame in satin nickel, a finish that keeps water marks and fingerprints less obvious than polished chrome. For cleaning, switch off at the wall, wait for the lamp to go cold, then wipe the glass with a cloth wrung out in warm water and dry it off; the nickel asks for no more than a dust. It runs on ordinary household mains and belongs indoors. Alongside it we stock the same shape in satin black, a smaller diameter and a larger size for wider rooms.
