Description

A shallow glass drum sits close against the ceiling here, ribbed all the way round so the light breaks up gently as it passes through. The glass is clear, which keeps the antique brass frame in view, warm and softly aged rather than bright and showy. Two E14 lamps sit behind the glass, and golf ball LEDs are what we would fit, as they tuck neatly into the shallow depth without pressing against the diffuser. It measures 28cm across the ceiling.

Because it holds tight to the ceiling, it earns its keep where headroom is short: hallways, landings, the top of a stairwell, a small bedroom or a box room. It is also rated against splashing water, so it can serve as the main light in a bathroom, an en suite or a cloakroom. It will dim, provided the lamps you choose are dimmable ones, and it needs an earth connection at the ceiling. We tend to reach for this one when a pendant would sit in the way and a plain opal disc would look too anonymous.

Glass and metal make up the whole fitting, with the ribbing giving the clear shade some substance and helping to disguise the odd fingerprint. When the glass needs attention, take the power off first, then wipe it with a barely damp cloth and dry it properly; the brass wants nothing more than a dust, so keep polishes and sprays well away from it. It carries a one year warranty. The same fitting is made in polished chrome, satin nickel and satin black, so there is an option if brass is too warm for the room in question, and we would happily mix finishes between a hallway and a bathroom. Lamps are not included.
