Start with the signal

Reception problems are almost always signal problems rather than television problems. Check your postcode against a reception predictor to find your nearest transmitter, its direction and its polarisation, which tells you whether an indoor aerial is realistic or whether the aerial needs to go in the loft or outside. Height and a clear line of sight matter more than any other factor, and no indoor aerial will overcome a hill.

Feeding more than one television

Splitting an aerial feed weakens the signal to each outlet, so beyond two points a distribution amplifier is usually needed to make up the loss. Amplify once, close to the incoming feed, rather than chaining amplifiers, since each stage adds noise as well as level. If a masthead amplifier sits at the aerial, the distribution amplifier must offer DC pass on the leg that feeds it or the aerial will appear dead.

Cable and connections

Use 75 ohm coaxial cable for terrestrial and satellite rated cable for satellite, and pay attention to screening rather than jacket thickness, because thin braid lets in interference from LED lighting, mains wiring and mobile transmissions. The most common installation fault is a stray braid strand touching the centre core, which shorts the feed and mimics a failed aerial entirely.

Mounting the television

Two things decide whether a bracket fits and holds: the VESA hole pattern on the back of the screen, measured in millimetres, and what the wall is made of. Solid masonry is straightforward. Plasterboard must be fixed into the studs rather than the board, and dot and dab needs fixings long enough to reach the masonry behind. Aim for the centre of the screen at seated eye level, which is lower than most people expect.

Projection instead of a screen

Where a much larger image is wanted, a projector and screen often costs less than an equivalent television. Size the screen so viewers sit between roughly 1.5 and 2.5 times the screen width away, then use the projector throw ratio to check it can be mounted at the required distance. Controlling light in the room improves the result more than spending more on the screen surface.

5G interference, the modern culprit

Mobile networks now transmit close to television frequencies, so reception that has deteriorated for no obvious reason is frequently 4G or 5G interference rather than a failing aerial. An in-line filter between the aerial and the equipment removes those frequencies and is the cheapest first thing to try before replacing anything.

Will an indoor aerial work at my address?
It depends on local signal strength rather than the aerial. Indoor aerials work within reasonable range of a main transmitter. In weak areas, valleys or behind hills, loft or outdoor mounting is the only dependable option. Check a postcode reception predictor first.
