Garage and Workshop Lighting

Lighting a garage or workshop calls for fittings that shrug off cold, damp and dust rather than decorative pieces. We stock LED battens, IP-rated bulkheads, and high and low bay lights built for the job: bright, even light over a bench, a car or storage, wired to run for years in an unheated space. Sensor and emergency versions are here too.

Lighting built for garages and workshops

A garage or workshop asks more of a light than most rooms. Fittings sit in cold, damp and dust, take knocks, and often run for hours over a bench or a car. We stock the functional side of lighting for exactly these spaces: LED battens, bulkheads, and high and low bay lights that give bright, even output and keep going in conditions that would see off a decorative fitting.

Battens are the workhorse. A single 4ft or 5ft LED batten throws a wide, shadow-free wash across a work area, and linkable versions let you run a line of them down a longer garage or workshop. For dry, attached garages an IP20 batten is fine; for a detached, unheated or damp space, choose an IP65 non-corrosive fitting that seals out moisture and dust.

Bulkheads, bay lights and sensors

Bulkheads suit lower ceilings, porches and side walls, and many carry an IP65 rating with cool, daylight-white output. Where a workshop has real height, high and low bay lights push a lot of lumens down from above. Across the range you will find CCT-adjustable models that switch between warm, cool and daylight white, microwave and PIR sensor versions for hands-full moments, and options with a three-hour emergency battery for power cuts.

The same fittings work well in a shed, a home gym, a store room or a small commercial unit. If you are lighting the outside of a garage or need security cover, our floodlights and security lights sit alongside this range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best lighting for a garage?

For most garages an LED batten is the best starting point. It gives a wide, even wash of light with no dark corners, mounts flat to the ceiling, and runs cool and cheap to leave on. Add a bulkhead or two on the walls for task areas, and step up to high or low bay lights if the ceiling is tall.

What IP rating do I need for a garage or workshop?

For a heated, attached garage that stays dry, an IP20 fitting is fine. For a detached, unheated or damp garage, a workshop or a shed, choose IP65. An IP65 non-corrosive fitting seals out moisture and dust and copes with the condensation you get on cold mornings.

How many lumens do I need to light a workshop?

As a rough guide, aim for around 300 lumens per square metre for general garage lighting and 500 or more over a workbench. A 5ft LED batten typically puts out 5,000 to 6,500 lumens, so one or two will light a standard single garage; larger or taller spaces are better served by bay lights.

What colour temperature works best in a garage?

Cool white to daylight, roughly 4000K to 6500K, gives the crisp, bright light that suits close work and shows colours accurately. Many of our battens and bulkheads are CCT-adjustable, so you can pick warm, cool or daylight white on the fitting itself.

Can I use these lights in a shed or outbuilding?

Yes. The same IP65 battens and bulkheads made for garages and workshops suit sheds, outbuildings, home gyms and store rooms. Check the fitting is rated IP65 if the space is unheated or prone to damp.

Do you offer sensor or emergency versions?

We do. Several bulkheads and battens come with a built-in microwave or PIR sensor, so the light comes on as you walk in with your hands full. Others include a three-hour emergency battery that keeps the light on during a power cut, which is useful in a windowless workspace.
