Description

The Knightsbridge TPB14EMSLED is a 14W LED emergency bulkhead with an integrated microwave PIR sensor, IP44 rating, and three selectable emergency modes: maintained, non-maintained, and switched. The fitting delivers 1070 lumens of 6000K daylight-white output in normal operation and 300 lumens in emergency mode, powered by an internal battery backup that activates when mains power is lost.

Designed for commercial buildings, HMOs, external covered walkways, stairwells and sheltered outdoor areas where emergency lighting compliance is required, the bulkhead replaces older 28W 2D fittings with lower energy consumption and longer life. The microwave sensor detects movement within its zone and can be linked to additional fittings via a slave terminal, allowing multiple units to respond to a single occupancy event. The polycarbonate housing and opal diffuser are IP44-rated against water splashes and solid debris, making the fitting suitable for external soffits, car park ceilings, and bathroom zones outside the immediate shower area.

The white polycarbonate body measures 330mm diameter with a 110mm projection from the ceiling or wall surface. The opal diffuser spreads the 105-degree beam angle across the fitting aperture, providing wide-area coverage without harsh glare. The fitting is Class II double-insulated, requiring no earth connection, and operates on 230V 50Hz mains. The LED module and driver are non-dimmable and rated for 72,000 hours to L70B50 (the point at which 50% of units will have degraded to 70% of initial output).

What are the three emergency modes and which should I choose?

Maintained mode keeps the light on continuously and switches to battery in a power cut. Non-maintained mode only lights up when mains power is lost, staying dark otherwise. Switched mode allows normal switching but illuminates on battery if mains fails while the switch is on. Non-maintained is typical for escape routes in commercial buildings; maintained suits areas needing constant illumination.

How does the PIR sensor work?

The microwave sensor detects movement within its detection zone and switches the light on automatically. When linked via the slave terminal, one sensor can control multiple bulkheads in the same area, reducing wiring complexity in corridors or car parks.

Can this be used outdoors?

The IP44 rating protects against water splashes and solid debris, making it suitable for sheltered outdoor locations such as covered walkways, car park ceilings, and building soffits. It is not rated for direct rain exposure or fully open exterior mounting.

How long does the emergency battery last?

Emergency runtime depends on the battery charge cycle and ambient temperature, but typical non-maintained emergency bulkheads provide 3 hours of backup illumination at 300 lumens. The battery is excluded from the 3-year warranty as it is a consumable component.
