Linear, Cluster and Branching Forms Explained

Most modern chandeliers in our range take one of three forms, and the right choice usually follows the shape of the space beneath it. Long, narrow rooms and tables call for a linear design, square and round spaces suit a cluster or ring, and tall or open-plan areas give branching pieces the room they need to spread.

Linear suspensions

A linear suspension runs a row of lights along a single horizontal bar or panel. We stock linear designs from compact three-light bars up to fourteen-light chandeliers, with integrated LED versions at fixed lengths of 1m, 1.2m and 1.6m, most of them in alabaster and one in crystal for a sharper sparkle. They cast an even band of warm white light along their full length, which is why they sit so naturally over rectangular tables and kitchen islands. Vertical linear designs turn the same idea on end, stacking as many as ten lights into a column that suits a hallway or a tall stair void.

Cluster chandeliers

A cluster gathers several drops from a single ceiling point. Within our range that runs from ten-light alabaster clusters in matt black or brushed brass through to globe clusters of thirty-seven lights, including frosted glass spheres in polished chrome and versions in black and brushed gold. Staggered drop heights give a cluster real depth, so it reads well from every angle and pairs naturally with a round table below.

Branching designs

Branching suspensions spread tree-style arms outwards from a central stem, each arm finished with a glass shade. Ours come in gold and matt black with smoked or amber glass, in five to eight-light versions. The loose, organic spread suits living rooms, where the fitting is viewed from sofas and doorways rather than walked beneath, and it fills a wide ceiling without a heavy central mass.

Beyond those three you will also find ring and radial chandeliers, two-tier and layered panel designs, cone and globe shapes, and petal-tiered pieces stacking up to five layers, so there is a silhouette here for almost any modern room.

Sizing a Modern Chandelier Over a Dining Table

Sizing matters more with chandeliers than with any other fitting. Most of our designs measure 50cm or more across, and many fall into the large or extra-large size bands, so the numbers are worth checking twice. The working rules are simple:

• Over a round or square table, choose a cluster, ring or radial design measuring roughly half to two thirds of the table width.
• Over a rectangular table, choose a linear suspension at half to two thirds of the table length, and never longer than the table itself.
• Hang the lowest point 75 to 90cm above the tabletop, low enough to light the surface properly yet high enough to keep sightlines clear.
• If the ceiling sits above 2.6 metres, let the fitting drop slightly lower so it still reads as part of the table setting rather than floating away from it.

Light count is the other half of the equation. Six to nine lights cover most everyday tables, while ten-light and larger designs suit long tables and bigger dining rooms where a smaller fitting would look lost.

Hanging Linear Suspensions Over Kitchen Islands

A single linear suspension is often a tidier answer over an island than a row of separate pendants: one canopy, one electrical point and an unbroken line of light along the worktop. Aim to leave 15 to 30cm of clear island at each end, so a 1m fitting suits an island of around 1.3 to 1.6 metres, while the 1.2m and 1.6m lengths handle longer runs. Hang the underside 75 to 90cm above the worktop, and lean towards integrated LED designs here, since there are no shades to lift down or bulbs to change above a busy work surface.

Light Output, Bulb Fittings and Ratings

Nearly everything on this page is built to carry the main ambient layer for its room, with warm white the most common output across the range. Many alabaster designs use integrated LED, where the diffuser glows evenly along its whole surface, while plenty of other chandeliers take standard E27 or E14 lamps so you can choose your own bulbs and replace them over time. Every fitting here carries an IP20 rating, which makes it right for dry indoor rooms such as dining rooms, living rooms, hallways and kitchen areas away from steam and splash zones.

Finishes and Materials at a Glance

Alabaster leads the range, giving a soft, even glow when lit and a veined, stone-like surface when off. Glass follows in opal, smoked and frosted forms, alongside crystal designs, amber and clear acrylic spheres, and leather suspensions for something more tactile. Metalwork comes in matt black, brushed brass, brass, gold, chrome and light grey, with white and soft white finishes keeping the larger pieces visually light, and the odd copper accent in the mix.
