What a pendant does that a ceiling light does not

A pendant, sometimes called a hanging light, drops below the ceiling line on a rod, chain or fabric flex. That gap is the whole point: it brings the light source down towards the surface you actually want lit, and it gives the fitting room to be seen from the side rather than only from below. In black, that matters more than in any other finish, because a black fitting is read as a shape rather than a colour. Hang it where the outline has air around it and it looks deliberate. Hang it in a corridor where people brush past it and it just gets in the way.

Drop height, and the three places people get it wrong

Over a dining table, aim for the bottom of the shade to sit roughly 75 to 85cm above the table top. That is low enough to light the table properly and high enough to see the person opposite you. Over a kitchen island, the same range works, though you can go a little higher if the pendants are wide. In a stairwell or a double-height hall, the rule changes entirely: hang the fitting so it is seen from the landing as well as the hall, and leave at least 2.1m of clearance at the lowest point of the stairs. Most pendants come with an adjustable flex or a set of rods, and the specification will give the minimum and maximum drop, so check that against your ceiling before you order.

One pendant, a pair, or a cluster

A single pendant works where there is a clear centre to light, such as a small round table. Over a rectangular table or a run of worktop, two or three smaller pendants spread the light far more evenly than one large one, and they look better in proportion. As a starting point, space them about 60 to 75cm apart and keep the outer two in from the ends of the table rather than level with them. A cluster, where several flexes drop from one ceiling plate at staggered heights, gives the effect of a group without needing three separate ceiling points, which matters if you are working with existing wiring.

Shade shape decides where the light goes

This is the practical difference between two black pendants that look similar in a photograph. A deep cone or dome throws a tight pool of light straight down, which is ideal over a table and poor as a room light. A globe or a wide open shade spills light sideways as well as down and lifts the whole room. An open cage or a frame with no shade at all puts the lamp itself on display, so the bulb you choose becomes part of the design. Where the shade is glass rather than metal, light passes through as well as around it, and a smoked or tinted glass softens the whole effect considerably.

Black with brass, gold and warm glass

Two-tone fittings are the most popular thing in decorative lighting at the moment, and for good reason: a warm metal on the inside of a black shade bounces a warmer light down than bare black does, so the fitting is both softer to look at and more flattering to sit under. Brass and gold interiors are the common pairing, with copper less usual and warmer again. If your room already has brass hardware, match the warmth of the tone rather than worrying about matching the black exactly, since blacks vary far less than warm metals do.

Light output and the lamp

A black shade absorbs rather than reflects, so a black pendant lights less of the room than a pale one of the same size. Over a table that is exactly what you want. As the only light in a living room it will not be enough, so plan wall lights, a lamp or downlights alongside it. For colour, a warm white lamp at 2700K to 3000K keeps black looking domestic; cooler light at 4000K and above makes it read as commercial. Where the lamp is visible in an open frame, a clear filament bulb adds warmth the finish itself cannot give.

Fitting and care

Pendants hang from a ceiling rose, and the weight goes into a joist or a proper fixing rather than plasterboard alone. Fabric flex can usually be shortened at the rose, but rod-hung fittings only adjust in fixed increments, so check the specification rather than assuming. For cleaning, use a dry microfibre cloth on the shade and the flex. Matt black in particular should never meet a solvent-based cleaner or a damp cloth, since both leave permanent marks on the coating.
