Large Round Mirrors

Big circle mirrors: what size does to a circle

A small round mirror is an accent that softens a corner. A large one is architecture. Past a certain diameter the circle stops reading as an object on the wall and starts reading as an opening in it, which is why a big round mirror above a fireplace or a console has an effect out of proportion to what it costs. The shape has no direction, so unlike a rectangle it does not tell you where to look, and unlike an arch it makes no reference to a window or a door. It simply holds the middle of a wall.

Why circles suit awkward walls

A circle has no corners to line up with anything, and that is its practical advantage. On a wall that is not quite square, beside a sloping ceiling, or above furniture that is off centre, a rectangle exposes every discrepancy because the eye compares its edges to the room. A circle has no edges to compare. The same forgiveness applies to hanging height: a round mirror a little high or low still looks deliberate where a rectangle would look wrong.

Frames, or almost none

Slim modern profiles are the largest group here and they suit the shape, because a thin ring of metal keeps the circle reading as a circle rather than as a frame that happens to be curved. A smaller group carry plainer traditional mouldings with more depth, which give the piece presence in a room with cornicing. Finishes split fairly evenly between gold, black and silver with a useful number in bronze, so there is a match for most schemes rather than one dominant look.

A large round mirror above a fireplace or a console

These are the two places a large round mirror does its best work. Over a fireplace the circle centres a wall that usually has a strong horizontal running across it, and the contrast of curve against mantel is the whole effect. Over a console it does something different, filling the wall above a narrow piece of furniture without the width a rectangle would need. The proportion rule is gentler here than elsewhere: a circle can be wider than two thirds of the furniture below it and still look right, because the eye measures the widest point only briefly.

Hanging a large round mirror: weight, and what holds it

Round mirrors at this size concentrate their weight differently from rectangles. There is usually a single central fixing or a pair set close together rather than a wide-spread pair, so more load sits on less wall. Fix into a stud or into masonry, use fixings rated well above the stated weight, and do not rely on plasterboard alone however tidy the plug looks. Every product page carries the weight, which is the number to buy fixings against rather than the diameter.

Glass, metal and living with one

Glass is in most of these, with metal and wood in roughly equal measure in the frames. Day to day they ask for nothing unusual: dust the frame dry, spray cleaner onto the cloth rather than onto the mirror. The one circle-specific habit worth having is to clean in straight overlapping passes rather than following the curve, because a circular wiping motion leaves swirl marks that catch the light exactly where the shape draws the eye.
