Hard case or soft bag?
The deciding factor is not the value of the equipment, it is what happens around it. A padded bag deals with rain, dust and ordinary handling, which covers the journey from home to a rehearsal room. A hard case deals with being stacked under other people equipment, loaded by someone who did not buy it, or checked onto a flight. Anything travelling in a shared van should be in a hard case, and anything you carry yourself is usually fine in a good bag.
Rack cases and U sizing
Rack equipment is measured in U, one U being 1.75 inches of front panel height. Total the U of everything going in, then add one or two spare for cabling and airflow, because a tightly packed rack traps heat. Confirm internal depth as well as height, since a shallow case will not accept a deep power amplifier and connectors need room for cable bends behind the unit.
Materials and build
Moulded ABS is light and water resistant, and the foam interior can often be cut to fit specific items, which suits microphones, cables and small equipment. Plywood with aluminium extrusion and butterfly catches is the touring standard: heavier, considerably stronger and repairable when a corner takes a knock. Choose by how often it travels rather than by what it costs.
Measuring properly
Measure the equipment and then account for everything that projects beyond the chassis, since knobs, handles and connectors are what actually break. For instrument bags, check the described body shape rather than the category name, because an electric guitar bag will not hold a dreadnought and key count decides keyboard bag sizing.
Getting the most from a case
Pack heavy items low and secure anything that could move, because a loose item inside a case causes more damage than no case would. Let equipment dry before you close a lid on it, keep cables off connectors that are still plugged in, and check catches and rivets from time to time, since a case that opens in transit is worse than none.
