How to choose an LED ceiling light
Start with the ceiling height, because it decides how much drop you can spare. Under about 2.4 metres, a flush fitting (a flush mount, in US terms) keeps the plane clear and stops taller guests ducking. Above that, a semi-flush with a short stem adds a bit of shape without crowding the room. Next, think about output rather than wattage alone: LED draws far less power for the same brightness, so read the lumen figure if it is listed. As a rough guide, a bedroom wants a gentler wash, while a kitchen or home office needs a stronger, more even spread. Finally, match the diameter to the room. A 35cm disc suits a landing; 60cm to 80cm reads better over a large living space.
Flush, semi-flush and linear shapes
Flush ceiling lights sit directly against the surface and work hard in halls, landings and low-ceilinged bedrooms. Semi-flush models hang a few centimetres clear, which lets light bounce upward as well as down and softens the shadow line around the fitting. Linear bars are the answer over kitchen islands, long dining tables and desks, where a round shape leaves the ends of the run dim. Square and rectangular panels suit modern extensions and utility rooms, and a handful of designs double as wall lights, so you can repeat the same form on two planes. High bay fittings sit at the industrial end, built for garages, workshops and warehouses with tall roofs.
Where each style works, room by room
In a hallway, keep the fitting shallow and centre it between doorways so the beam does not clip an architrave. Bedrooms do well with a warm, diffused flush light on a dimmer, with lamps handling the evening. Kitchens benefit from cooler, brighter light directly over the prep zones, often a linear bar over the island plus a round fitting in the seating area. Bathrooms need a fitting rated for the zone it sits in. In living rooms, treat the ceiling light as the ambient layer and build around it with floor lamps and picture lights. Open-plan spaces usually read best with two or three matching fittings spaced evenly rather than one oversized disc in the middle.
Finishes and materials
Metal frames in matt black, matt white, brushed brass and aged brass cover the bulk of the collection, many paired with an acrylic or opal diffuser that hides the diodes and spreads the light evenly. Black suits industrial and contemporary schemes and holds its own against pale plaster. Brass tones warm a room and sit well with oak and rattan. White disappears into the ceiling, which is exactly what you want when the fitting is purely functional. Wood detailing brings a softer, Scandinavian feel to linear designs. Alabaster shades are carved from natural stone, so the veining differs from piece to piece and the light through them is warm and slightly uneven in the best way.
Colour temperature, dimming and controls
Colour temperature is measured in kelvin. 3000K is a warm white that flatters bedrooms and living rooms; 4000K is a neutral white that keeps kitchens, bathrooms and studies looking crisp; cool white above that suits garages and commercial spaces. Colour selectable fittings let you switch between settings at installation or by remote, which is useful if you are not sure how a room will be used long term. Check dimming before you buy: integrated LED needs a trailing edge LED dimmer, and pairing an old dimmer with a new driver is the usual cause of flicker. Some designs come with a handset for brightness and tone, so no wall switch change is needed.
Looking after your LED ceiling lights
Integrated LED means the diodes are built into the fitting rather than sitting in a replaceable lamp, so there is no bulb to change and the driver does the work behind the diffuser. Most upkeep is dusting. Isolate the power at the wall, let the fitting cool, then wipe the diffuser with a soft dry cloth or one barely damp with water. Avoid solvents and abrasive creams, which cloud acrylic and dull brushed metal. In kitchens, a little washing-up liquid in warm water lifts cooking film from the shade. Stone shades want a dry cloth only, since porous surfaces mark easily. Any hard-wired fitting should be installed by a qualified electrician.
