Bedroom Rugs

Our bedroom rugs give your feet somewhere to land when you wake, whether laid beside the bed, at its foot or partly beneath it. Every rug here suits the bedroom, and most work in the living room too. We stock shaggy piles, round rugs, runners and kids' rugs, as well as rugs in natural tones, blue and grey.

Where to place a bedroom rug

Start with the spot where your feet touch the floor first thing. Runners on either side of the bed mean there is a rug underfoot whichever way you get up. At the foot of the bed, a rug slightly wider than the mattress frames the bed and softens the walk to the wardrobe.

For a fuller look, lay a large rectangular rug partly beneath the bed, stopping short of the bedside tables so they stand level. A round rug suits a reading corner or the space in front of a dressing table. We stock runners, round rugs and rectangular rugs, and most here are rectangular.

Sizing a bedroom rug around your bed

Measure the bed before you browse, then compare it with the rug's listed size. A rug laid partly beneath the bed should reach out past the sides far enough to step onto with both feet. A runner looks right when it runs close to the length of the bed, and a rug at the foot should be at least as wide as the bed.

Leave a band of bare floor between the rug and the walls so the room does not feel crowded. Before you order, mark the rug's outline on the floor with masking tape to see how the space feels.

Choosing the pile of a bedroom rug

Pile decides how a rug feels when you step out of bed. We stock shaggy rugs, whose long, loose pile feels deep and soft under bare feet and adds a cosy, layered look over carpet or floorboards. Some of the rugs here have a high pile, which feels thick and plush underfoot.

A few are flatweave, a low, thin weave that suits a spot where a door opens over it and is quick to vacuum. If your door only just clears the floor, measure the gap and check it against the pile height on the rug's page before choosing a deeper pile.

What our bedroom rugs are made from

Most of our bedroom rugs are polyester, a soft synthetic fibre that feels gentle underfoot. Some are wool, which is springy and warm. A few are acrylic, another soft synthetic fibre. Some are faux sheepskin, fluffy enough to sink your toes into.

A few are jute, a plant fibre with a firmer, nubbly texture. It brings an earthy, relaxed look to a room and is happiest where you wear slippers, so right beside the bed a softer fibre is kinder to bare feet.

Colours and patterns for bedroom rugs

Take your lead from the bed linen and curtains. We stock bedroom rugs in natural shades, blue and grey, which sit happily beside pale or neutral bedding. A few come in green, a calm colour for a room built around rest. Plain rugs, which we stock too, keep things quiet beside busy bedding.

Where the bedding is plain, a pattern lifts the floor. We stock geometric designs for a crisp, contemporary room. Some of the rugs here are floral, which suits a cottage-style room. A few have a vintage feel. We also stock modern and Scandinavian styles, plus kids' rugs for a child's bedroom and rugs that suit a nursery.

Looking after a bedroom rug

A little routine keeps a bedroom rug looking its best. Vacuum regularly on a low setting, and switch off the brush bar on a shaggy rug so it does not tug at the pile. Blot spills straight away with a damp cloth rather than rubbing, and read the care notes for your rug: where it says spot clean only, keep it out of the washing machine.

On wooden or laminate floors, a non-slip underlay stops the rug creeping and adds cushioning underfoot. Turn the rug round from time to time so sunlight and footsteps fall evenly across it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a bedroom rug go under the bed or beside it?

Both work, and the size of your room usually decides it. A large rug partly beneath the bed pulls the whole sleeping area together, while runners beside the bed or a rug at its foot suit a smaller room and are easier to lift for cleaning.

What size rug should go under a double or king-size bed?

Whatever the bed, the rug should reach out past both sides far enough that you step onto it rather than the floor when you get up, with a border of bare floor left around the room. Measure the bed and the room, then compare them with the size listed on the rug's page.

Which bedroom rugs feel softest under bare feet?

A shaggy pile feels deepest and softest, and we stock shaggy rugs. Some of the rugs here are faux sheepskin, which is fluffy and warm to step onto. If you prefer a firmer, textured feel, a few are jute.

Can I put a bedroom rug in the washing machine?

Check the care notes on the rug's page first. Where a rug is marked spot clean only, blot spills with a damp cloth, vacuum on a low setting and keep it out of the machine.

How do I stop a bedroom rug slipping on a wooden floor?

Lay a non-slip underlay or rug pad beneath it, trimmed slightly smaller than the rug so the edges lie flat. It holds the rug in place on wood or laminate and adds a little cushioning too.

Can I lay a rug over bedroom carpet?

Yes. A rug over carpet adds colour and texture, and a shaggy pile gives an extra soft layer by the bed. An underlay made for carpet stops the rug wandering as you walk on it.

Do you stock rugs for a child's bedroom or nursery?

Yes, we stock kids' rugs, and rugs that suit a nursery as well. On a hard floor, add a non-slip underlay so small feet do not skid.
