Kekere 150 x 240cm Jute & Cotton Rug - Natural & Rust

The Kekere is a flatwoven rug in jute and cotton, 240cm long and 150cm wide. The pattern is a serrated sawtooth, interlocking teeth of colour that run across the width and shift band by band: deep rust and dark brown at both ends, through orange, into a pale natural jute across the middle. The weave is open enough to read the individual strands, and at 1cm thick the rug lies almost level with the floor.

At 150 by 240cm it sits under the front legs of a sofa or covers the floor of a small room end to end, which suits a living room, a bedroom or a dining area. Because the colour shifts along the length rather than the width, the way it is laid decides whether the rust end meets the door or the natural centre does. It lies in front of a sofa, across the width of the seat.

The rug is jute and cotton, woven by hand on traditional looms. The sawtooth has to be built into the weave stitch by stitch, and holding the colour shift steady through it is the part the weaving controls. Because of the fibres used, some shedding is to be expected.

How do I look after it?

Blot spills straight away with a clean sponge or cloth. Take care when vacuuming, and do not use a vacuum with a rotating brush, which will damage the fibres. It can be professionally cleaned.
