Why commercial systems use 100V line
In a shop or an office the problem is not volume, it is distributing a modest amount of sound to a lot of places. A 100V line system sends the signal at a higher voltage and lower current, so it survives long cable runs without losing level, and every speaker carries a transformer with tap settings that decide how much of the amplifier it takes. That means one amplifier can feed dozens of speakers over thin cable, which is far cheaper than wiring each one back as a low impedance pair.
Horn, pendant and sound projector designs
Horn speakers throw sound a long way in one direction and shrug off weather, which makes them the choice for yards, car parks and factory floors where speech has to cut through machinery. Pendant speakers hang from an exposed ceiling and fire downwards, so they suit warehouses, atriums and any space with no accessible ceiling void. Sound projectors mount on a wall or a column and aim along a space, which works well in corridors, platforms and covered walkways.
Planning zones and tap settings
Group the building into zones that need separate control, such as a shop floor, a stockroom and a staff area, then set the tap on each speaker to suit how loud that zone needs to be. Add up the tap wattages of every speaker on a line and keep the total comfortably below the amplifier rating, leaving around 20 per cent headroom. It is better to fit more speakers on low taps than fewer speakers working hard, because the coverage is more even and the sound less intrusive.
Outdoor and industrial areas
Outside, check the IP rating and mount the speaker so water runs off rather than collecting in the horn. Metal horns and treated cones cope with damp far better than untreated paper. In industrial spaces, remember that a hard concrete and steel building reflects sound badly, so more speakers at lower level will always sound clearer than a few loud ones fighting the echo.
Paging, music and voice alarm
A system used for paging needs clear speech above all, so prioritise placement and intelligibility over frequency response. Where music and paging share a system, a mixer amplifier with a priority input will duck the music automatically when a microphone is used. If the system forms part of a life safety or voice alarm installation, that is a regulated area with its own standards, so confirm the specification with your installer before ordering.
