Chrome, nickel or silver
The three cool metals get used loosely and behave differently. Chrome is a hard, mirror-bright plating with a faint blue cast, and it is the most reflective finish available on a pendant. Nickel is softer and slightly warmer, and brushed nickel in particular reads as more domestic. Silver, including silver leaf, is a decorative applied finish rather than a plating. For a kitchen or bathroom, chrome is usually the right answer, because the same hardness that makes it look bright also makes it the easiest to clean and the least likely to mark.
Why it suits kitchens and bathrooms
Most homes already have chrome in these rooms — taps, handles, appliance trims, shower fittings — so a chrome pendant joins something rather than introducing a new metal. It also handles the conditions: steam does not affect the plating, cooking residue wipes off without a trace, and there is no lacquer to strip the way there is on brass or gold. Where a brass pendant over a hob will need thought about patina and cleaning products, a chrome one simply gets wiped.
Reflection, and where it works against you
Chrome is a mirror, and that cuts both ways. It bounces light back into a room, which helps in a small or dark kitchen, but it also reflects everything around it, including window light, downlights and the room itself. Over a dining table in a room with strong daylight, a highly polished chrome pendant can throw distracting bright spots. Brushed chrome solves this: it keeps the cool tone and the easy cleaning while scattering reflections rather than mirroring them, which is why it has become the more popular of the two.
Hanging over an island
Aim for the bottom of the shade to sit 75 to 85cm above the worktop. Over a standard island of 1.8 to 2.4m, two or three pendants light it evenly; space them 60 to 75cm apart and centre the group on the island rather than the room. Because chrome is reflective, pay particular attention to what sits opposite: a run of pendants facing a window will pick up the glazing bars all day. Angling the group slightly or choosing brushed rather than polished usually solves it.
Bathrooms and IP ratings
A pendant over a bath or in a shower room needs an appropriate IP rating, and the zones are measured from the bath or shower rather than applied to the whole room. IP44 is the usual minimum outside the immediate zone and IP65 where direct water is possible. Chrome is well suited to these rooms, but the rating is about the fitting's construction rather than its finish, so a chrome pendant is not automatically bathroom-safe — check the figure on the product page.
Water spots and cleaning
The one weakness of polished chrome is that it shows water marks more clearly than any other finish. Wipe with a barely damp microfibre cloth and dry immediately rather than leaving it to air-dry, which is what leaves the spotting. Avoid limescale removers and anything abrasive, since both will dull the plating permanently. In a hard-water area, a brushed finish will look better for longer with less effort than a polished one.
