Why brass ends up over the island

More brass pendants are bought for kitchens than for any other room, and the reason is practical as much as decorative. A kitchen is full of hard, cool surfaces, and a warm metal is one of the few things that softens it without adding clutter. Brass also wears in rather than out: a small scratch on a painted fitting shows as a chip, while on brass it dulls into the finish. Over an island, where the fitting sits at eye level and gets looked at from a metre away all evening, that difference shows up within a year.

How many, and how far apart

Over a standard island of around 1.8 to 2.4m, two or three pendants look right and light it evenly. Two suit a shorter run and give a calmer look; three suit a longer island and light the whole working surface. Space them 60 to 75cm apart, centre the group on the island rather than on the room, and keep the outer two roughly 30cm in from the ends. A single large pendant only works on a genuinely small island, and it leaves the ends of the worktop underlit.

Glare, and the shade shape that prevents it

This is the mistake people most often make and only notice after installation. Over an island you are standing, so the lamp sits close to eye level, and an open-bottomed shade puts a bare bulb directly in your line of sight from across the room. A deeper shade, a shade with a diffuser, or an opal glass insert hides the lamp while still throwing light down onto the worktop. If you want an open shade with a visible filament bulb, either hang it slightly higher or accept that it is a decorative light and put the task lighting under the cabinets.

Drop height and clearance

Aim for the bottom of the shade to sit 75 to 85cm above the worktop. That is high enough to see across the island and low enough to light it properly. If anyone in the household is tall, err towards the upper end, and check the drop against the fitting's stated minimum and maximum, since rod-hung pendants adjust in fixed increments while fabric flex can usually be shortened at the ceiling rose. Where the ceiling is over about 2.6m, a longer rod set is often needed and is worth confirming before ordering.

Brass in a working kitchen

Heat, steam and cooking residue all reach a pendant hung over an island, and they affect brass differently depending on how it is finished. Lacquered brass is sealed, so residue wipes off and the colour stays exactly as bought. Unlacquered brass is bare metal and will patinate, darkening unevenly and faster in a kitchen than it would in a hallway, because grease and moisture accelerate it. Neither is wrong, but choose deliberately: lacquered if you want it to look the same in five years, unlacquered if you want it to age. Brushed and antique finishes hide day-to-day marks considerably better than polished.

The interior of the shade

A brass-lined interior bounces warm light down onto the worktop, which flatters food and gives the light a golden quality that a white lining does not. A white-lined shade throws a cleaner, brighter and more neutral light, better if you actually prepare food under it. A dark unlined interior gives the tightest, most dramatic pool and the least usable working light. Decide which of the two jobs the pendant is doing before choosing, because the same fitting can be excellent at one and poor at the other.

Cleaning without ruining the finish

A dry or barely damp microfibre cloth handles ordinary kitchen residue. Metal polish must never touch a lacquered brass fitting, since it cuts through the lacquer and leaves patchy bare metal that cannot be restored without stripping the whole piece. Unlacquered brass can be polished back if you want it bright, or left alone if you prefer the patina. Let the fitting cool before wiping it, and avoid degreasing sprays entirely, as most contain solvents that attack both lacquer and patina.
