Description
Here the light source is built in rather than lamped: a black LED engine drawing 20W and running at 2700K, so what lands on the floor is warm and easy on the eye rather than clinical. The beam is directional, throwing light down and forward instead of spilling across the ceiling, and colour rendering is high enough that timber, paint and fabric all keep their proper tone. It drops into a matching recessed base, which is a separate part of the range, and a driver is needed to run it.
We use this sort of downlight where the ceiling needs to stay quiet and the light needs to do the work: over a kitchen run, along a hallway, above a stair landing, or in a living room where a pendant would sit too low over seating. The black face reads as a shadow rather than a bright disc when the light is off, which suits darker ceilings and concrete soffits particularly well. At 16cm across it is one of the broader apertures we stock, so it covers ground without needing a long row of small holes. It is intended for dry rooms indoors, away from splashing and steam.
The engine is double insulated and finished in black throughout, front face included, so nothing shiny catches the eye from below. Dust gathers on a recessed trim faster than most people expect; a dry cloth wiped over the face every few months, with the power off, keeps the output honest. It carries a five year warranty. Recessed bases in the range come in black, gold and white and across a run of cut-out sizes, so you can match the aperture to the ceiling or mix a gold base with this black engine for a little contrast. The driver is bought separately, and a dimmable one will let you take the level down.

Frequently Asked
How much light does it give out?
System flux is 1660 lumens at 2700K warm white, from a 20W LED engine with a 50 degree beam angle.
Do I need to buy anything else to use it?
Yes. It needs a Sunset recessed base and a driver, both sold separately. The matching base for this engine is 165 x 138mm with a 150mm cut-out.
Can it be dimmed?
It can, provided a dimmable driver is used. With a standard non-dimmable driver it runs at full output only.
Are the LEDs replaceable?
No. The LED is integral to the engine, so there is no lamp to change over its life.
Is it suitable for a bathroom or an outside soffit?
No. It is rated IP20, which means dry indoor locations only.
How should I clean it?
Switch the circuit off first, then wipe the visible face with a dry or barely damp cloth. Avoid solvents and abrasive creams on the black finish.
