Description

Gold gives this one a warmer face than the black and white versions in the same size, picking up a little light at the edge of the aperture rather than reading as a dark hole overhead. The body is a deep cylinder closed with a plain round trim, roughly 16cm across the face, and it carries no lampholder of its own. We hold the Sunset bases in five sizes and this is the second largest, made for the broader apertures rather than the pinhole ones.

We tend to reach for the wider Sunset bases where a room wants fewer, softer pools of light instead of a tight grid of small ones: open-plan kitchens, a long hallway, a sitting room with height to play with. The gold face works well alongside brass taps and ironmongery, oak, and warm painted timber, and it holds its own against a cream or off-white ceiling where a stark white trim can look flat. Keep it to indoor rooms that stay dry, well away from steam and splashing.

The finish runs evenly over the trim and down the inner wall, so the colour still reads as gold when you look up into it from below rather than showing a pale seam. Looking after it asks very little: an occasional dust with a dry lint-free cloth or a soft brush around the rim, and nothing abrasive or solvent-based on the gold. It carries a three year warranty. If you would rather the aperture receded into the ceiling, the same size comes in black and in white, and gold runs right through the range from the smallest base up, which makes it straightforward to mix apertures along a hall and landing while keeping one finish throughout.
