Description

This is the mid-size Sunset recessed base, finished in black and measuring 16cm across the visible face. It is a non-electrical housing, so it holds a light source rather than being one, and the whole point of it is that the ceiling does the talking instead of the fitting. The face is plain, the black finish keeps it reading as a shadow in a pale ceiling, and the body sits back out of sight once it is in place.

It suits kitchens, hallways, landings and living rooms where you want light coming down from the ceiling without a shade or a pendant in the way. Black works hardest against white plaster, where each opening reads as a neat dark circle, and it also disappears into darker or timber-lined ceilings. We would reach for this middle size where the smaller Sunset bases feel too tight for the room and the largest looks heavy, so a run of them down a hallway or over a kitchen island stays in proportion. The same base is offered in white and in gold, and the shape repeats across a run of smaller and larger sizes, which is useful when one ceiling needs two different apertures.

The finish is a flat black, so it takes dust the way any dark surface does; a wipe over the rim with a dry duster when you clean the ceiling is all it asks, and nothing wet or abrasive should go near it. Because there is no glass or shade to remove, upkeep is limited to that visible ring. It carries a three year warranty. Mixed with the gold version over a splashback, or kept uniformly black through an open-plan space, it stays quiet enough to repeat as often as a room needs.
