Description

The largest of the Sunset recessed bases, this one shows a slim black ring at the ceiling and very little else. It measures 215mm across the face, with a body that sits well back above it. The base is non-electric, holding no lamp holder or driver of its own, so the light comes from the fitting it is paired with. We like black at this size: a wide aperture in a pale ceiling can read as a hole, and the dark finish settles it.

It earns its place in rooms where you want the light and not the fitting: kitchens, hallways, a study, an open-plan living space. We reach for the wide one over an island or a long run of worktop, where a broader pool of light does more than a scatter of small apertures, and keep the narrow sizes for corridors and edges. It is a sensible choice in a room with height, where a pendant would hang into the way of things, and it suits anyone rethinking a ceiling that already has too much on it.

The visible face is black, so the fitting stays quiet whether the light is on or off. Dust gathers around a recess more readily than you would expect, and a dry brush or the soft head of a vacuum run round the rim once in a while keeps the edge crisp; in a kitchen, wipe cooking film away before it dulls the finish. It carries a three year warranty. Black is the one we stock most of at this size.
