Description

The Wrenfield large flush ceiling light sits unusually close to the ceiling, with a projection of just 150mm under a 450mm shade of Tiffany-style leaded glass. Multicoloured pieces are cut one at a time and joined with soldered seams over a metal frame, so the pattern is held in lead rather than printed on. Two lamp holders behind the glass each take an E27 GLS bulb of up to 60W, and bulbs are supplied separately. The fitting weighs 2.7kg and dims with dimmable bulbs on a compatible dimmer switch.

A shallow flush fitting is the answer to rooms where headroom is tight and a semi-flush or pendant would be in the way: a low cottage ceiling, a hallway, a landing, a loft bedroom or the top of a staircase. It gives an even wash of light across a room instead of a pool in one place, which makes it a sensible main light rather than a decorative extra. The leaded pattern suits older houses and adds colour to plain plaster, and at 450mm across it reads as the main event on a small ceiling. Rated IP20, it is for dry indoor rooms.

The shade is soldered leaded glass on a metal gallery and the fitting is wired as Class 1, so it needs an earth and a qualified electrician. Dust the glass with a dry soft cloth or a soft brush, and lift marks with a barely damp cloth before drying at once, keeping solvents, polishes and abrasive creams off the solder lines. Let bulbs cool before changing them. Because the glass carries so much colour, we would keep the rest of the room simple and let the ceiling do the talking.
