Description
The Wistcombe uplighter floor lamp takes the Tiffany-style glass in the other direction, with a 420mm shade held mouth-up at the top of a 1755mm column so the light lifts to the ceiling and comes back into the room softly. One E27 GLS bulb up to 60W sits in the bowl, bought separately. The shade is made from cut pieces of multicoloured glass leaded into a metal frame, and the whole floor light weighs 5.9kg with a weighted base to hold the height steady.
An uplighter is the piece we reach for when a room feels flat or a ceiling feels low, because bouncing light off the ceiling spreads it further than a downward shade. It works in a living room corner, behind a sofa, in a home office where glare on a screen is a nuisance, or at the turn of a landing. At 1755mm it stands taller than most floor lamps, so it clears the back of seating easily. The coloured glass glows from inside the bowl, giving warmth at the same time as the wash overhead.
Each shade is built by hand from individual glass pieces, leaded and set into the frame, which is why the colour placement varies between lamps. The column and base are finished in a warm tone that sits behind the glass. Because the bowl faces up, dust settles inside, so lift it out with a dry soft cloth or soft brush every few weeks and use a barely damp cloth for marks. Keep sprays and solvents off the leading. It is not rated for dimming, and it is a Class 2 double-insulated lamp rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms. A matching Wistcombe wall light and table lamp share the glass.

Frequently Asked
What does an uplighter do differently?
The shade sits mouth-up, so light goes to the ceiling and comes back as a soft wash rather than pooling below. It is a good way to lift a room with a low or flat ceiling.
What is the shade made of?
Cut pieces of multicoloured glass, leaded together by hand into a metal frame in the Tiffany-style method. The hand assembly means each shade differs slightly.
How do I clean an upward-facing shade?
Dust collects in the bowl, so check it every few weeks and lift dust out with a dry soft cloth or soft brush. Use a barely damp cloth for marks, and keep sprays and solvents away from the leading.
How tall is it?
1755mm to the top, with a 420mm shade, so it stands clear of the back of a sofa or armchair. Allow around 450mm of floor width for the base.
What bulb does it need?
One E27 screw bulb up to 60W in a GLS shape, not supplied. A warm white LED works well here and stays cool inside an upward-facing bowl.
Does it need an earthed supply?
No, it is a Class 2 double-insulated lamp. It is rated IP20, so keep it to dry indoor rooms.
