Description
The Wistcombe wall light is a compact Tiffany-style fitting, 380mm wide and 210mm high, sitting only 140mm out from the wall. The shade is built from cut pieces of multicoloured glass leaded into a metal frame on a backplate, so light washes up the wall and out into the room at the same time. It takes one E14 golf bulb up to 40W, supplied separately, and weighs 1kg. The shallow projection is the useful part: at 140mm it barely intrudes on a walkway.
Wall lights come into their own where table and floor space has run out. A pair either side of a fireplace, a bed or a mirror gives a room balance, and a run along a hallway or up a staircase marks the way without a bright overhead light. In a living room alcove or a snug, we find a wall sconce at this size gives a low warm glow for the evening. It suits period houses and traditional rooms, and it is dimmable when paired with a suitable bulb and switch.
The glass is cut and leaded into the frame by hand, so the pattern differs slightly from one fitting to the next. The backplate and frame are finished in a warm tone that keeps the colour at the front. Dust with a dry soft cloth once the bulb is cool, and wipe marks with a barely damp cloth, keeping sprays and solvents away from the leaded seams. It is a Class 2 double-insulated fitting, so no earth connection is required, and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms. A Wistcombe floor lamp, table lamp and semi-flush use the same glass.

Frequently Asked
How far does it project from the wall?
140mm, with an overall width of 380mm and a height of 210mm. That makes it a practical choice for hallways, stairs and any wall along a walkway.
What is the shade made from?
Pieces of multicoloured glass, cut and leaded by hand into a metal frame in the Tiffany-style method. Each fitting varies a little because of the hand assembly.
What bulb does it use?
One E14 small screw bulb up to 40W in a golf ball shape, not included. A warm white LED golf bulb suits the glass and keeps the fitting cool.
Can it be dimmed?
Yes, with a dimmable bulb and a compatible dimmer switch. Use an LED-rated dimmer if you fit an LED bulb.
How do I clean it?
Turn it off and let the bulb cool, then dust with a dry soft cloth or soft brush. Wipe marks with a barely damp cloth and dry at once, keeping polish and solvents off the leading.
Can I fit it in a bathroom?
No. It is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms only, with no moisture protection. It is Class 2 double-insulated, so it does not need an earth.
