Description
This wooden keepsake box is a cheerful home for baby's first treasures, inspired by the nursery rhyme about the wheels on the bus. Across the lid, a red double-decker bus marked LONDON carries a busload of friendly animals at its windows, from a sheep and a cat to a rabbit, a duck and a cow, with a little Union flag flying from the roof. Over the bus run the words "The wheels on the bus go round and round", and beneath it a blue banner reads "Baby's Little Keepsakes". The box is square, standing 9.6cm tall, 19.8cm wide and 20cm deep, with a red lid and soft pale pink sides.
Along the front, a line of guards in tall black bearskin hats and red tunics marches in step, led by one riding a brown horse, so the box is as pretty at eye level as it is on top. It sits happily on a nursery shelf, a chest of drawers or a bookcase, where the London scene adds a bright splash of colour. Inside there is room for the small things worth keeping from the early months: a hospital bracelet, a first pair of socks, a lock of hair, cards and photographs.
The box is made of wood, and the lid, painted red inside to match its rim, opens back on small hinges at the rear, while the interior is a plain cream with a flat base where cards and photographs can lie without bending. Dust it now and then with a soft, dry cloth to keep the printed design bright, and keep it somewhere dry so the wood stays in good order. As a keepsake it is for grown-ups to fill and look after rather than a plaything. We like to tuck a few first treasures inside before handing it over, so it becomes a gift that is opened and added to for years.
