Description

The WD Purple 4TB is a surveillance-grade hard drive designed for continuous 24/7 operation in CCTV and DVR/NVR systems. Built with WD's AllFrame AI technology, the drive is optimised for high-definition video recording workloads and supports up to 64 camera inputs simultaneously. The 4TB capacity stores approximately 800 hours of 1080p footage or 400 hours of 4K footage depending on compression and frame rate settings.

Designed for professional security installations, home CCTV setups and surveillance workstations, the WD Purple handles the sustained write-intensive workload that standard desktop drives cannot manage reliably. The drive operates at 5400 RPM with a 64MB cache and SATA III 6Gb/s interface, fitting standard 3.5-inch drive bays in NVRs, DVRs and desktop surveillance PCs. The AllFrame technology reduces frame loss and improves playback performance when multiple cameras are recording simultaneously.

WD rates the Purple series for 180TB per year workload, which reflects constant recording from multiple high-definition cameras. The drive includes tarnish-resistant components to protect against environmental contamination in server rooms and equipment cupboards. The 12V and 5V DC power input is standard across NVR and DVR equipment, and the drive draws 0.62A at 12V under typical load. The WD Purple is backed by a manufacturer's warranty (see specification for term).

The drive label shows model WD40PURZ, confirming this is the current-generation Purple series. Manufacturing date, serial number and regulatory certifications (CE, FCC, RoHS) are printed on the label. The drive ships as a bare OEM unit without mounting screws or SATA cables — these are typically supplied with the NVR or DVR chassis.

Frequently Asked

Is this drive suitable for desktop PC use?

The WD Purple is optimised for surveillance workloads (continuous recording) rather than desktop use. For general PC storage, WD Blue or WD Black drives are better suited. The Purple will work in a desktop but its firmware prioritises sustained writes over random read/write performance.

How much footage can 4TB store?

Capacity depends on resolution, compression (H.264, H.265) and frame rate. As a rough guide: 800 hours of 1080p footage at standard bit rates, or 400 hours of 4K. H.265 compression can nearly double these figures.

What interface does it use?

SATA III (6Gb/s). The drive fits standard 3.5-inch drive bays and uses a standard SATA data connector plus a 4-pin Molex or SATA power connector (both 12V and 5V rails required).

Can it be used in a RAID array?

Yes. WD Purple drives support RAID configurations in multi-bay NVRs. The AllFrame firmware is RAID-compatible, though for very large arrays WD Red Pro drives (designed for NAS RAID) may offer better error recovery features.
