The Unbranded JL3088 is a universal remote control (or remote handset) that runs up to four devices from one unit. Set it up for your TV, DVD player, satellite box and HiFi, and you can switch between them without hunting for separate remotes. It's a straightforward replacement if you've lost or broken an original handset, and the full function layout covers the buttons you actually use day to day.

Programming is done through your smartphone, tablet or PC, with a lead included for a direct connection. Because the codes come from the web rather than a fixed onboard database, the remote can keep pace with new equipment and brands as they arrive, so it won't fall out of date the way older code-based remotes tend to. Setup is simple, and once you've matched it to your gear the settings stay in place. There are also dedicated shortcut buttons for Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Prime Video, which saves scrolling through menus to reach the apps you watch most.

The handset measures 228 x 51 x 23mm and weighs 98g without batteries, giving it a solid feel in the hand. It runs on 2x AAA batteries, which aren't supplied, so pick up a pair before you start programming.
