Description

The Thornmere large flush ceiling light has a square Tiffany-style shade, 425mm on each side, in multicoloured leaded glass, projecting 235mm from the ceiling. Squaring off the shade gives a crisper outline than a round fitting and lines up neatly with square rooms, panelling and cabinetry. Two 60W E27 GLS bulbs sit inside, supplied separately, and it is dimmable with dimmable bulbs and a compatible dimmer. The finished fitting weighs 3.8kg.

Use it as the main light in a bedroom, a landing, a hallway or a dining room with a lower ceiling, where a pendant on a chain would hang into the space. Fittings like this are also listed as flush mount or semi-flush ceiling lights, and at 425mm square this one has enough width to light a good sized room on its own. It suits period houses and cottages in particular, though the square line keeps it from looking too ornate in a plainer room.

The glass is cut and leaded panel by panel and then soldered into a metal frame, so colour balance and seam lines are never quite the same twice. The mounting plate is metal and the shade releases to reach the bulbs. It is Class 1, so an earth connection is needed at the ceiling, and we would leave installation to a qualified electrician. At 3.8kg, fix into a joist or a rated ceiling anchor. Dust with a dry cloth and keep sprays off the solder. Matching Thornmere pendants and a medium flush light are also available.
