Description
This straw hedgehog ornament brings a little woodland charm to the Christmas season, sitting upright on its own small feet with its arms held out in front. Its face is a soft fan of straw-coloured bristles in warm tan and pale cream, drawn to a pointed snout with a glossy black nose and two bright black eyes, and a pair of rounded ears at the top of its head. Its back and sides are covered in layers of brown spines, each one edged with gold glitter that catches the light from the tree or a lamp. The body is pale beige with a gently wrinkled texture. It stands 10.2cm tall, 8.5cm wide and 9cm deep, small enough for a narrow windowsill.
We like it best on a mantelpiece, a windowsill or a bookshelf through December, where its small size lets it tuck in beside sprigs of greenery or other woodland figures. It is just as much at home on a hall table or a desk, bringing a touch of the countryside indoors for the season. Because it stands on its own feet it needs no hook or branch, so it can sit on any flat surface. It also makes a thoughtful little Christmas gift, easy to slip into a stocking or add to a festive hamper.
Its texture is part of its appeal: the bristly straw-coloured head, the layered spines and the glitter edging all give it a homely, rustic look. To keep it looking its best, dust it gently with a soft dry brush or cloth, keep it away from damp, and store it somewhere cool and dry when the decorations come down. As with any straw decoration, keep it clear of candles and open flames. Set it at the front of a shelf where its glittering back can be seen, or tuck it among a little greenery for a cosy winter scene.
